Fake Drug War Receives A Boost As Court Convicts Producers Of Killer Syrup

The war against fake drugs and other substandard regulated products being wagged by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) received a boost recently as a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos convicted the manufacturers of My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture that killed 84 children in 2008 to fourteen (14) years imprisonment.

The presiding judge, Justice Okechukwu Okeke also ordered that the company, Barewa Pharmaceutical be compulsorily wound up and its assets forfeited to the Federal Government.

NAFDAC charged the firm, Barewa Pharmaceutical Company, its Production manager, Mr Adeyemo Abiodun and the Quality Assurance manager, Egbele Eromosele on six count charge for the production and sale of the killer syrup, My Pikin.

Delivering his judgement, Justice Okeke convicted the accused on two count charge and acquitted them on four. He ruled “having found the accused guilty on two counts, the convicts are hereby sentenced to seven years imprisonment on each charge”. He continued, “The Company is also ordered to be wound up compulsorily in line with the provisions of the law, and its assets forfeited to the Federal Government”.

Reacting to the judgement, Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii applauded the courage of the trial judge and said the agency was excited with the verdict which he argues is a major milestone in the fight against drug counterfeting.

It will be recalled that NAFDAC arraigned the convicts before the Federal High Court in 2009 following the death of 84 children from the consumption of My Pikin teething mixture. The killer syrup was alleged to be contaminated with a substance called Diethylene glycol.
