Nigerians in United Kingdom came together at the weekend to honor the Director General of National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Dr Paul Orhii for the successes the Agency has recorded in the introduction of cutting-edge technologies to fight drug counterfeiting in the country.

Some Nigerian professionals who converged at the Lemeridian Piccadilly hotel in London took their turns to commend the efforts of Dr. Orhii for his innovative approach towards combating the hydra- headed problem of fake drugs which came down from 16.7% in 2005 to 6.4% in 2012.

The award ceremony which was organized by African leadership magazine provided the opportunity for the NAFDAC Boss to sensitize Nigerians in the Diaspora about current efforts being made by Federal Government to improve health care services and boast self-sufficiency in the production of essential medicines.

Dr. Orhii who dedicated the merit award to the president Goodluck Jonathan, Health Minister, Prof. Christian Onyebuchi Chukwu and NAFDAC staff said the Agency has been able to achieve so because Government gave it the support and free hand to operate.

He disclosed that not less than three Nigerian pharmaceutical companies have very high prospect of obtaining world health organization (WHO) pre –qualification of some essential medicines very soon in addition to two other companies (Swipha and Drugfield) that have attained such feat.

The Director General said NAFDAC has also recorded enormous successes in the regulation of the quality of food products and providing a congenial business environment for Alhaji Aliko Dangote and other stakeholders in the food and beverage industry to continue to take giant strides in expanding their businesses and employed labour.

Dr. Orhii identified low production capacity and consequent dependency on importation of medicines, porous borders, low literacy and pervasive public ignorance as some of the factors encouraging drug counterfeiting in the country.

Meanwhile, the Director General of consumer protection council (CPC), Mrs. Dupe Atoke was also honored at the event.
