National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has kick-started a nationwide campaign to boost export of value added agricultural products in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda.

Speaking at a one-day sensitization workshop on the guidelines and requirements for intending exporters of NAFDAC regulated products for north-central geo-political zone in Makurdi, Benue State, Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii said the workshop was designed to enlighten critical stakeholders on the necessary requirements for export of processed and semi-processed regulated products in order to ensure improved compliance and accelerate national economic growth.

His words: “NAFDAC is fully committed towards facilitating export of processed and semi-processed regulated products in line with the transformation agenda of His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. The Agency ensures that quality regulated products are duly certified before they are exported from Nigeria”.

He regretted that many exporters have had their products rejected and destroyed because such products were not certified by NAFDAC arising from non-compliance with regulatory requirements of processed and semi-processed commodities, insufficient technical or scientific competence of some stakeholders on Good Agricultural Practices, non-compliance with import requirements and quality standards of importing countries among other factors.

Dr Orhii said to reverse this ugly trend, laboratory analysis of products intended for export and certification are done at no cost to the exporter by the Agency and implored exporters of NAFDAC regulated products to take advantage of this gesture to improve the nation’s export trade.

While commending NAFDAC for this initiative, Benue State Governor, Rt. Hon. Dr. Gabriel Suswam described the timing of the workshop as apt and promised to leverage on the opportunity to mobilize farmers and other stakeholders in the north central geo-political zone to take maximum advantage of this gesture and be in the pole position for the export of value added agricultural products in the country.
