National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed fake drugs and other substandard regulated products worth N500 million in Awka, Anambra State.

Director General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii who led other stakeholders in the destruction exercise said the drugs which comprise of fake anti – malaria, anti – biotics, anti – hypertensive, multivitamins, injectables, cosmetics and other range of regulated products were seized from manufacturers, importers and distributors of regulated products in Anambra State as well as expired products voluntarily handed over by Onitsha Head Bridge Market Union.

According to him, the destruction of the products was part of the agency’s strategy in stamping out offensive regulated products from circulation. His words; “this destruction exercise is in line with our strategy aimed at preventing the reintroduction of seized counterfeit, substandard and expired drugs, unwholesome food products, corrosive cosmetics and other regulated products back into circulation”.

Dr. Orhii commended the vigilance and timely intervention of NAFDAC regulatory officers who worked tireless in removing the harmful products from circulation and reiterated the agency’s commitment to zero tolerance for fake drugs and other substandard regulated products.

He called on relevant stakeholders particularly members of the public to support the agency with useful information that will lead to apprehension of counterfeiters of NAFDAC regulated products.

It will be recalled that a similar exercise was carried out by NAFDAC where fake drugs and other substandard regulated products worth over N100 million was destroyed in Enugu less than three months ago.
