The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) hereby warns the general public against the consumption of a mercury-tainted frozen Ling fillet produced in New Zealand. The product, marketed as “Frozen ling Fillet” a delicious white fish fillet with a mild flavour, was found to contain mercury at level of 2.2 parts per million (ppm) exceeding the legal limit of 0.5ppm and is indicated to expire on the 24th July, 2016. This information was revealed by the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety (CFS) following the importation of the product into Hong Kong by Sun Wah Marine Products (HK) Co.Ltd, Hong Kong. It further revealed that consumption of predatory fish species such as tuna, alfonsino, shark, sword fish, marlin, orange roughly and king mackerel which are the main source of mercury to humans may contain high source which poses high level risk especially to the health of foetus in expectant mothers, infants and young children. It could also affect the nervous system, particularly the developing brain and at high levels can affect vision, hearing, muscle co-ordination and memory in adults. CFS has directed all supermarkets in Hong Kong as well as importers and distributors to stop the sale of the affected brand and recall the product from the market.

In view of the potential health risks associated with the consumption of these products, NAFDAC warns that  “Frozen Ling Fillet” produced in New Zealand should not be consumed.

Wholesalers, retailers and consumers should be proactive in ensuring that such products are brought to NAFDAC if they come across any, and under no circumstances should such product be sold or consumed.
