Meet the Director PRS

Dr. Abimbola Opeyemi ADEGBOYE, from Ikire in Osun State southwest Nigeria, is the current Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics (PRS).  He coordinates the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of plans, programmes, and projects of the Agency, conducting research on NAFDAC activities as well as other subjects of interest to the Agency. Also, as the pioneer Heads, he concurrently coordinates the Office of Trade and International Relations (OTIR) and Office of Research (OOR) both conceptualized by his principal and domiciled in the Director General’s Office.

His principal research and professional interests are in the field of food safety bordering on both qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments of the toxic and non-toxic contaminants in foods; thereby providing valuable scientific details necessary to inform and assist regulatory actions and policy formulations needed for safeguarding national food supply systems and aiding food trade economies.

Dr. Adegboye graduated from the prestigious University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Food Technology and had an interesting career in the private sector traversing bottling, fruits, and vegetable processing, vegetable oil extraction, cocoa industry, sugar, and dairy including commodities (1990-1999). The private sector experiences and acquired skills came in handy when he joined NAFDAC in January 2000. He developed himself further with the pursuits of Masters of Science in Environmental Resources Management and Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicines from the Lagos State University (2001) and University of Ibadan (2011) respectively.

He joined the Agency as Principal Regulatory Officer and rose through the rank, serving meritoriously and with recognitions for excellence in service, decorated twice for excellent services by two different Directors-General (2008 and 2013), and winner of several fellowships, travel awards, and grants from international organisations including FAO (Seminar on Total Diet Study at CCAfrica Session Nairobi Kenya), Tuskegee University Alabama/USDA/APHIS (Pan African Risk Analysis / SPS Workshop Dar es Salam Tanzania), IAEA (CCVDRF Houston Texas US and International Food Safety Conference Vienna Austria), USDA/TAMU (Regulatory Science In Food Systems Scholarship) and African Society for Toxicological Sciences (Society of Toxicologists Annual Conference, Washington DC US).

He has served at various times as Technical Assistant 2016-2020 and Special Assistant to the Director General (2021) and once headed the Laboratory Services Directorate (2015-2016) now comprising 4 Directorates. Project Coordinator of some national and agency projects including Total Diet Study Project of FAO/WHO, IAEA projects in NAFDAC, STDF/ITC NEPC project on Shea butter and Sesame Seeds – NAFDAC’s component. Currently, he is the lead contact and represents the Agency in running of MoU’s between NAFDAC and Universities also in some bilateral relations. He currently represents the DG on the Technical Advisory Board of the African Centre of Excellence in Mycotoxin and Food Safety of the Federal University of Technology Minna north-central Nigeria where he also teaches postgraduate students as an unpaid industrial partner temporary lecturer in Introduction to Food Safety, Food Laws, Standards and Regulations, Risk Analysis and Prevention of Toxicity at the African Centre of Excellence in Mycotoxin and Food Safety, Federal University of Technology Minna Nigeria and in the Advisory Board of Sodium Salt Study of the Cardiovascular Unit of the University of Abuja.

His ongoing training, teaching, and research focus are in the sharing and deploying garnered safety data from research into the primary food production, semi-processing, and food distribution practices; in order to establish and maintain sustainable end-to-end safe food supply corridor and generate more food safety data concurrently.
