Public Alert No: 014/2020- Recall of Liquid Fruit Grape Juice product code 27327 by South Africa Foods Company

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has received report that South Africa Pioneer Foods Company has voluntarily recalled Liqui Fruit Red Grape Juice 330ml can with product code 27327.

Updated Report available reveal that Pioneer Foods has confirmed that Liqui Fruit Red Grape Juice 330ml cans related to the batch under recall does not contain piece of glass as previously reported. The substance has now been independently verified to be Potassium Bitartrate crystals.

Potassium Bitartrate is a naturally occurring substance in products made from grapes such as grape juice and wine. Crystallization of Potassium Bitartrate occurs under certain conditions such as low temperature and in this case occurred post-processing and canning. It is also more commonly known as cream of tartar when used as a cooking aid

Given the presence of these crystals, consumers are advised not to consume the product. Ingestion of high quantities of Potassium Bitartrate (cream of tartar) can potentially result in life-threatening hyperkalemia

Recalled Product Details

The details of the recalled product are as follows:

NAFDAC implores importers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers to immediately stop the importation, distribution and sale of the affected liqui fruit Red grape juice 300ml.

Anyone in possession of the affected product should submit the affected product in their possession to nearest NAFDAC office.

Consumers are advised to report adverse events and quality issues related to use of this product to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC PRASCOR (20543 TOLL FREE from all networks)  via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng
