Public Alert No: 31/2018 – Health Related Matters

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been informed that the United Nation Officer for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), on 19TH September,2018 reported 27,000 cases of cholera with 510 deaths in Lake chad region with communities in Nigeria being the most hit. The OCHA indicated that the 2018 outbreak was the worst in four years. The last two major outbreaks were in 2010 and 2014.

Heavy Rainfall and flood may create enabling environment for the outbreak to spread further.

NAFDAC encourages the general public to follow the basic cholera prevention steps listed as follows; Drink and use safe water, Wash hand often with safe water, Cook food well (especially sea food), keep food covered and eat it hot, wash fruit vegetables carefully. Clean up safely in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

 NAFDAC implores Heath care professionals and members of the public to report any case of cholera to the nearest health care centre and relevant regulatory authorities.
